Passion for chocolate




With chocolate, love-hate is the rule. I love you chocolate because you’re tasty and keep me company and I hate you because you’re fattening, you complicate my digestion, fill me up with cholesterol and ruin my teeth.

There are many theories about how chocolate started its career in food.
The Maya certainly made a cocoa drink and, for the Aztecs the cocoa tree was a symbol of fortune and strength because the drink they made from its beans had an invigorating effect. The beans were also used as coins. But, when the Spanish conquest destroyed Latin America’s indigenous cultures, cocoa trees survived.
The Spaniards brought cocoa and chocolate to Europe in the 1500s, beginning a trade in cocoa paste, and Italy was the second European country to be conquered by its taste.
In the 1600s, hot, steaming chocolate, was very fashionable among princes and aristocrats as the beverage of the truly rich; they alone were able to afford it. Some noblewomen even liked to sip the drink in church, during the services…
